Newcastle United want to further strengthen the defence by bringing in a new centre-back before the window closes on Monday and Diego Carlos seems to their main target.
The Magpies have seen two proposals, €25m and €33m, including bonuses, get turned down by Sevilla.
On Wednesday, ABC Sevilla reported the Tyneside club could ‘go all out’ to sign the 28-year-old by making a new €50m offer.
That has not happened so far, but even if they were to submit a proposal in that region, the La Liga side will ‘resist attempts’ made by the English club.
That’s according to Marca, who state the Brazilian has been ‘tempted’ by Eddie Howe’s side during the last month, and his representatives are arriving in Andalusia ‘to try to reach an impossible agreement’.
Marca say the Premier League side ‘could not and did not’ spend more than €40-45m on Carlos. The Spanish club would have thought about it if the offer was in around €50-55m, but not in the last week of the window.
Julen Lopetegui’s side don’t want to let the Brazilian leave at this stage of the window as they are not left with enough time to find a replacement, despite Carlos’ agent putting ‘some interesting names on the table’.
Sevilla are clear that unless Newcastle ‘crazy’ and offer a figure close to his clause of over €70m, then no sale would be considered. As per Marca, it seems unlikely that Newcastle will meet those figures or come close to his buyout clause.
The La Liga side have so far ‘withstood the onslaught’ from Howe’s side and are likely to continue to ‘resist’ any fresh attempt from Newcastle to sign Carlos in January.
