Liverpool loanee Lazar Markovic is set to be sidelined for several weeks, or longer, due to an adductor injury.
Surplus to requirements at Liverpool, Markovic would have struggled to compete with Jurgen Klopp’s selection of Coutinho, Firmino, Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana and Divock Origi, with all those able to operate across a front three, and also able on the wing.
The Sporting player was brought off during the Champions League clash against Legia Warsaw last week. There was hope he could be fit for Sunday’s game against Benfica, but he didn’t even get to the bench.
According to A Bola, the club’s doctors still don’t know how bad the injury is, so it’s still impossible to set a return date for him. Markovic is only taking part in specific training at the moment.
The Serbian international has a big history of injuries, so it’s always a concern for him, and of course for his parent club Liverpool. It’s one of the big reasons why he couldn’t put together a long sequence of games in the past few seasons.
Markovic is still trying to find his place at Sporting. The Portuguese media have a lot of patience with him due to his good time at Benfica, but it’s been rare for him to get any starts. He has two goals in 13 appearances so far.
The last thing Liverpool want is another injury hampered season for Markovic, and one which sees his value decrease further.
