Much like Kylian Mbappé, there are few around the globe who doubt Erling Haaland’s ability.
The Norwegian striker, who took the European football scene by storm at RB Salzburg, has been incredible for Borussia Dortmund since joining, with the Bundesliga side under no illusions they won’t keep him for much longer.
There’s already talk of him leaving thanks to a release clause in his contract, with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and other big teams linked in the past, present and definitely future.
Much like Dortmund, RB Salzburg knew full well they were simply a stepping stone in the striker’s career, which is why they didn’t really fight when the Germans came knocking last year, as Christoph Freund, their sports director, told Sky90, relayed by Welt.
He said: “Erling really bit us. The talks with Dortmund were short. They told they had come to an agreement. we didn’t have that much influence on it, but it worked out correctly. Many clubs were interested and go it in touch. In the end, it was a decision made by the player”.
While many believe Haaland could end up going to Manchester United for a reunion with his former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Freund sees a different trajectory for his former player, one taking him to Anfield.
Welt explain: ‘When TV expert Lothar Matthäus enumerated possible switch options, his friend agreed with they keyword Liverpool FC: “He will land there”.’
Then again, it doesn’t really matter whether he ends up at Anfield, Old Trafford or the Nou Camp.
Freund explained: “He can play for any club in the world. With his mentality, his will and self confidence, he will be able to make a mark on European football in the next ten years”.
Considering Liverpool have also been somewhat heavily linked with a move for Kylian Mbappé, you’d think it would be one or the other, right?
