On February 21st, Leeds United appointed Javi Gracia as Jesse Marsch’s successor, after sacking the American earlier that month.
The Whites have played five matches since Marsch’s exit, out of which two were managed by the Spaniard.
Leeds are currently in 17th spot and are in another relegation battle, after they escaped the drop to the Championship last season under Marsch. The ex-Watford coach is tasked with helping the Whites continue in the top flight.
The Premier League side were able to bring in the Spaniard after he refused to accept an approach from Mexico, which was likely made after he left Al-Sadd last June. This was revealed by the Leeds manager during an interview with Mexico’s Publisport.
“A few months ago, they told me something about an option that did not culminate in anything, but at that time I was not ready to move from Spain due to personal circumstances. I certainly appreciate it a lot,” he said.
“At that time when I was contacted, I had the opportunity to follow Mexican football a little more and the truth is that I saw many games, analysing teams and I saw that the level was very good.”
When Leeds confirmed Gracia’s appointment, they didn’t confirm his contract length, and the manager has opened the door for a future move to Mexico.
“Why not [manage in Mexico], in the future you never know what can happen,” Gracia explained.
