George Gitau will return to Middlesbrough after spending the second half of this season on loan at Raith Rovers.
That’s at least what Africa Foot are reporting, and they state Raith Rovers had an option to make the 21-year-old’s stay permanent.
However, they have decided not to retain the Middlesbrough owned player and therefore, he will return to the Riverside Stadium.
Gitau came up through the ranks of Boro’s youth system but hasn’t managed to find his way into their first team. He joined the Scottish Championship club to gain experience and continue his development, but the move didn’t work out.
Africa Foot report the defender will be part of Middlesbrough’s pre-season preparations under Michael Carrick. However, the Championship side have decided to send him out in the summer window.
The youngster is represented by MI Sports Management and a source close to the agency has told Africa Foot about Carrick and Boro’s plan for him.
‘He (Gitau) will not be returning to Raith Rovers next season, as the club has waived the option to buy him. He will join the squad for pre-season, but Middlesbrough, with the agreement of Carrick, are actively seeking a new loan or a sale. The loan to Raith didn’t produce the desired results, but that is how it is. He will not be returning there,’ a source said.
It needs to be seen whether this claim will be backed up in England.
Gitau’s preferred position is on the right side of the defence but he can be used across the back line.
