Manchester City bolstered their defence by signing Sergio Gómez and Manuel Akanji in the summer window.
The left-back arrived at the Etihad from Anderlecht on August 16th. He is currently with the Spain U21 squad, preparing for their clash against Norway U21 later today.
Gómez has now revealed the Jupiler Pro League side didn’t make it easy for him to join Manchester City.
“When Man City called me, I was super happy. These are opportunities that come. They were difficult weeks because Anderlecht didn’t make it easy at all. I had a good season and I had to take a step forward,” he told El Partidazo de COPE, relayed by BeSoccer.
The 21-year-old made his debut for the English champions when he came off the bench in their 4-2 win over Crystal Palace in August. Since then, he’s made three more appearances, which includes a start in Manchester City’s 4-0 win over Sevilla in the Champions League.
Gómez is delighted with how things have gone for him since he made a switch to the Premier League.
“Things have gone well and I’m very happy with how things are going both at the club and at the national team,” the defender explained.
Guardiola has used his compatriot as a left-back at Manchester City this season, while the Spain U21 manager, Luis de la Fuente, has deployed him on the right wing.
On this subject, Gómez explained: “I consider myself a versatile player. I am available for whatever the coach asks of me. At the club, they ask me to play as a fullback and with Luis de la Fuente I had always played as a right winger, and he likes me to play there”.
