You might be aware of this, but Chelsea are in the business of finding a new goalkeeper to provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The man they’ve targeted is Rennes’ Édouard Mendy, who wants the move, but talks between the two sides are taking their time.
There has been update upon update on the matter, including the fact the player has found an agreement with Chelsea regarding his contract, but the shaking of hands between the two sides remains elusive.
With Ligue 1 now back under way, we are blessed with weekly press conferences, which is where Julien Stéphan, Rennes’ manager, was asked about the latest on the situation surrounding his goalkeeper.
He said, relayed by Ouest-France: “We’ve never hidden it. There are talks between Rennes and Chelsea but they haven’t come to anything yet. The idea is to have a quick final decision, one way or another. It would be ideal for everyone.
“There’s no problem with Édouard. He’s a great guy and his behaviour is fantastic. He’s still a leader in the dressing room. I don’t know what will happen, but if it does, good for him”.
As for whether the player would be able to play against Monaco at the weekend after missing the game against Nîmes Olympique because of an injury, the manager said he was back to full fitness, but he doesn’t know what will happen ‘in the next 48 hours’, so didn’t want to commit on whether he would feature in the game.
Stéphan also explained Rennes have yet to go after a replacement as they want this deal done before they think about that.
