Ben Brereton Diaz’s performances for Blackburn Rovers earned him a surprise call-up for Chile’s national side, leading to something of a fairytale for the forward and the South American country.
His exploits, and the fact he was playing for Chile whilst being in the Championship, received plenty of attention, and that includes regarding a transfer.
Blackburn managed to keep hold of him in the January window, and there’s interest already building ahead of the summer. Spain’s Fichajes say Sevilla are keen, but West Ham would be ‘favourites’ over them to complete a deal.
Monchi, Sevilla’s sports director, is said to have been following Brereton Diaz for months, hoping for a free transfer when his contract expires at Blackburn this summer. However, there’s an option to extend, and the costs of a deal, and the level of wages available, would benefit West Ham.
Should Blackburn push for a renewal then on their side is the near-guarantee of regular football, something which would help Brereton Diaz keep his place with Chile.
A lot will rest on whether the 23-year-old feels now is the right time for a move to West Ham, or any other club which presents themselves.
