Towards the end of the January transfer window, rumours from France emerged that West Ham had a particular interest in Saint-Etienne’s Kevin Malcuit.
The right-back, whose reputation in football has increased considerably over the past year or so, has not only attracted a lot of attention in England, but also Germany.
On Wednesday, France Football report that the Hammers didn’t just make one bid for Malcuit, they made two.
The French magazine state that Saint-Etienne first rejected an €8m offer for the right-back, before doing the same again when West Ham and Slaven Bilic came back with an improved bid of €10m.
Keen to hold onto their best players, the Ligue 1 side are speculated as readying a contract extension for the 25-year-old.
However, with the amount of interest surrounding Malcuit, which now includes Bundesliga club, Saint-Etienne will be hard-pressed to convince him to stay. France Football claim there’s a ‘real possibility’ he could leave, which will surely interest West Ham.
Of course, if they qualify for Europe once again (which looks likely as things stand) and keep playing against teams like Manchester United, making him stay could be easier than anticipated.
