A relatively strong rumour last week, Marcelo Guedes to West Ham appears to have gone a bit more quiet over the past few days, and there could be a good reason behind it.
The Brazilian centre-back was allegedly a target for the Hammers, who were reported to have made a €15m bid for the 31-year-old, as well as offering a ‘long-term deal’ that would double his wages.
Le Progres have since changed their tune a little bit, claiming he’d earn 50% more rather than double, but still…
Understandably, Marcelo was said to be interested in the offer, knowing this could be his last chance to get to play in the Premier League and earn a bigger wage, but nothing seemingly came of it.
According to Le Dauphiné Libéré, that’s because Lyon are reported to want €20m for their defender, aware of the financial power held by Premier League clubs.
Furthermore, letting one of their more consistent players leave would also weaken their squad.
The club are already relatively short in the centre-back department, meaning selling him would cause more problems (and more work) than the money coming in would solve.
Now it’s up to the Hammers and we’ll soon find out how much they really want the defender.
