Openly looking for a defensive midfielder, West Brom appear to be shopping around for the right candidate, as Tony Pulis looks to eventually move on from an ageing Darren Fletcher.
The 33-year-old is out of contract in the summer, even if the Baggies do have an option to extend his deal by a year, but it seems a replacement is incoming in the summer.
The two leading candidates for the role appear to be William Carvalho and Ignacio Camacho, but if West Brom’s recent scouting trip is anything to go by, they appear to be monitoring a third option.
According to WebGirondins, the Premier League side had a man present at Bordeaux-Marseille on Sunday, and the logical target here would be Roma’s William Vainqueur.
The 28-year-old defensive midfielder has been in fine form with Marseille on loan from the Italian side, but with no option to buy in the deal, any negotiations between the two sides would need to start from scratch.
This allows teams like West Brom an opportunity to put their offer forward if they so wish, and with just one year left on his contract with Roma, this summer is the ideal time to do it.
Southampton have also been linked with a move for the player, most likely in case Oriol Romeu decided to wave them goodbye.
This isn’t by any means definitive, but considering the players on offer and West Brom’s needs, it makes a lot of sense.
