Following Roberto Martinez’s comments on Nacer Chadli’s chances of making the World Cup, the Belgian media have looked into how the West Brom midfielder would best get a chance of being on the plane to Russia.
The likeliest way they see it happening is if he goes as backup for Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco as a left-midfielder/wing-back, but he isn’t the only one vying for that spot.
According to DH, there are four players who could be picked, including the Baggies’ second most expensive transfer of all time.
The most ‘defensive’ option is Jordan Lukaku, Romelu’s brother, but the fact he’s only played six minutes over the past 23 Belgium games suggests he isn’t top of Martinez’s list.
Then there’s Anthony Limbombe, the Club Brugge revelation who made his debut for Belgium during the last international break.
The problem here is his lack of defensive ability, and struggle to get back in position when losing the ball, which is vital if Martinez is to play three at the back at the World Cup.
Finally, we have Adnan Januzaj, who hasn’t played for Belgium since 2014. That’s all there is to say about the former Manchester United winger, who, when last called up for friendlies against Mexico and Japan, remained in the bench.
This means the favourite is Nacer Chadli, at least from what DH are saying, as he’s remained in Martinez’s plans throughout his nightmare season at the Hawthorns.
So much so, in fact, that he’s made more appearances for Belgium this season than he has West Brom.
