Kevin Gameiro had a brilliant game for Atletico Madrid against Levante on Saturday, which will certainly help his selection chances in the short term. However, that’s all it is, explain the Spanish media, with there being chances around zero that he’s going to keep Diego Costa out of the team come January.
The Spanish media have been edging Gameiro to the door for months, with Everton easily being the English club most linked. A lack of a senior and capable enough striker at Goodison Park has led the club being linked to any good striker conceivably available in January, and the Toffees were said to be ‘very interested’ in Gameiro.
Despite his Levante performance, in which Gameiro scored twice, provided an assist, and was widely considered Man of the Match, the Frenchman’s Atletico days remain numbered, as explained by Marca on Monday.
Marca point out Gameiro’s own words as showing the player is aware his future is uncertain, and hinting at a possible winter move: “At the moment I give everything for the team, I’m fine here and we’ll see what happens in January.”
Gameiro is ‘not assured of his future’ at Atletico beyond January, explain the Spanish newspaper, with the club also looking for a book balancing transfer.
The worse Everton’s situation gets, the less attractive the club becomes, and that, rather than Gameiro hitting good form, could be the biggest hurdle to getting the Frenchman to Goodison.
Everton are now 16th in the Premier League, and a relegation battle looks possible given current form. David Unsworth has so far proven himself to be out of his depth and the club needs some positive news soon.
