Earlier this week, Vasco da Gama executive director of football Маrcelo Sant’Ana stated his side will “definitely try” to negotiate a new deal with Aston Villa for Philippe Coutinho.
The attacking midfielder has been on loan at the Brazilian club since last summer. As it stands, he will have to return to Villa Park as they don’t have a buying option as part of the loan deal.
Globo Esporte cover comments made by Vasco da Gama manager Fábio Carille on the Aston Villa man and the possibility of extending his stay.
The 33-year-old is currently on the sidelines after picking up an injury in his side’s 2-1 loss to Flamengo earlier this month. The coach has stated he should be fit for the clash against Santos on March 30th.
Former West Ham United star Dimitri Payet is also at Vasco da Gama. According to Globo, his days at the club are numbered. The manager, however, has refused to confirm this.
Carille was asked if he would advise Vasco da Gama to extend Coutinho’s and Payet’s contracts.
“We’ll wait. On the technical side, yes, but we have to look at the financial side, other things about the club. We still have a few months, this hasn’t been discussed, but it’s better to wait and understand everything to do what’s best for everyone,” he said.
Coutinho hasn’t been part of Unai Emery’s plans at the Premier League club. His contract at Villa Park expires in 2026 and Aston Villa are unlikely to pose any obstacles for his sale in the summer window.
