Inter Milan took Valentino Lazaro from Hertha Berlin in 2019 and after having struggled for regular minutes in the first half of the last season, he was loaned out to Newcastle United in January.

The Serie A side confirmed at that time the Magpies have an option to sign the 24-year-old on a permanent transfer this summer.

However, the Tyneside club decided not to exercise it and after returning to the San Siro, the Austria international has now joined Borussia Mönchengladbach on a loan deal.

Steve Bruce immediately offered the Inter owned player a berth in the starting XI, but things changed for Lazaro after lockdown was lifted and he had to settle for a place on the bench.

It’s not clear whether or not Newcastle wanted to retain Lazaro, but his representative, Max Hagmayr, has insisted his client didn’t want to extend his stay at St James’ Park.

“When he arrived, he was among the regulars [in the starting XI], but not in the post coronavirus,” Hagmayr told FcInterNews.

“We do not know the reasons for this choice, nor why he no longer played frequently. From there our decision [was made], we chose a new adventure.”

Lazaro played less than 500 minutes in 13 matches for Newcastle, which includes only four starts in the Premier League.

On the player’s decision to join Mönchengladbach, Lazaro’s agent said: “After the difficulties of the last six months in England post Covid, it was important for me to find a new experience for the boy where he could have perspective.

“For Valentino, Spanish, Italian and other German clubs were interested, but we are convinced that Borussia Mönchengladbach is the right club for Lazaro.”
