Steven Bergwijn impressed for PSV Eindhoven last season, scoring 14 goals and registering 12 assists in the league.

Watford want to strengthen the attacking division and have set sights on the Netherlands international.

According to Dutch newspaper AD, the Hornets made a ‘serious attempt’ to secure the services of the 21-year-old.

With the Premier League window set to close at 5pm on Thursday, Javi Gracia’s side ‘wanted to go very far’ by paying ‘tens of millions’ for Bergwijn. However, Watford are now forced to look elsewhere.

The report doesn’t specify why the English club ended their interest in Bergwijn, but it could be down to PSV’s €40m asking price.

Earlier today, we carried a report from L’Equipe, who explained that Watford identified Bergwijn as an alternative to Ismaïla Sarr. Crystal Palace are also chasing the Rennes winger.

After ending their chase for Bergwijn, Watford will be expected to up their efforts for Sarr.
