Italian journalist Carlo Alvino has poured doubt on suggestions Everton could make a move for Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret this summer.
The young shot stopper has found himself in an interesting battle with David Ospina for the number one shirt at Napoli this season, with the pair often swapping under Gennaro Gattuso.
That, according to reports, has led Meret’s entourage to demand a decision be made about their client’s future, with them wanting to know if he will be the number one long-term or need to seek it out elsewhere.
That’s seen him linked with Everton and his former manager Carlo Ancelotti, with initial reports stating the Blues boss is a big fan of the Italian.
This was followed by reports that Everton had a 30% chance of getting the goalkeeper in the summer, should they target him as a replacement for Jordan Pickford.
Alvino has poured doubt on those claims, though, stating that he actually wanted someone else during his time in Naples.
“Ancelotti didn’t bet on Meret; he wanted Areola,” he told Ne Parliamo il Lunedì, relayed by Spazio Napoli.
“Giuntoli wanted Leno, then De Laurentiis took Meret. It seems strange that Ancelotti is keen on Meret to take him to the Premier.
“I spoke to him about the boy, and he said – As a goalkeeper, he has to be able to save; Ancelotti was an old school coach.”
