Łukasz Fabiański has been first-choice goalkeeper at West Ham United since he joined them from Swansea City in 2018.
The 37-year-old didn’t manage to feature regularly for Poland before he announced his retirement from the national team a year ago.
That has helped the keeper focus on his game at West Ham, with whom he signed a new contract back in July. His current deal expires in 2023 and David Moyes’ side have an option to extend it by a year.
Wojciech Szczęsny is first-choice for Poland and is likely to start for them at the Qatar World Cup, if the Juventus man is available for selection.
Czesław Michniewicz took over the Poland managerial job after Paulo Sousa left them in January. Sportowy24 asked the coach whether he would have a deal with the West Ham player to return to the national team if Szczęsny picks up an injury prior to the World Cup.
“We do not think about such an option, Fabian has already finished his international career and is unlikely to change his mind. I talked to Łukasz Piszczek a year ago, I wanted to bring him to Legia, but he firmly refused, and Fabian is the same type as Piszczu,” Michniewicz said.
“Once he has something planned, it works as planned. This is not a crazy man who changes his mind overnight, but a serious guy. He has already said goodbye with the farewell, so the matter is clear.
“Although, of course, I regret that it happened so quickly that, as a coach, I did not live to see Fabiański compete with Szczęsny for a place in the goal of the Polish national team.”
