Thiago Alcantara’s situation has got a little bitter over the past week or so.
Whilst away on International duty with Spain, the player dismissed claims he’d said he’s leaving Bayern Munich. That saw Bild publish an article publicly accusing Thiago of lying, and now it’s getting murkier.
Uli Hoeneß, honorary president of Bayern Munich, has been speaking on German TV today, and Sport.de quote him as saying: “Thiago had a great offer with us for four years. A few days later he said that he was looking for a big challenge. Supposedly he is in agreement with Liverpool and Manchester United. The clubs have not yet approached Bayern. It’s not style, they want to blackmail us. But even if Thiago leaves, Kimmich, Goretzka and Müller will play. Then we have Tolisso, who was thrown back two years due to injuries.”
Liverpool and Manchester United were linked from the outset, with it seeming like Bayern wanted to create an auction for their player. That hasn’t happened yet, and United dropped out of the running for a while, with a widespread assumption Thiago would sign for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Over the past couple of weeks, the Old Trafford club has been dragged back into the picture, yet it’s clear neither side are moving concretely to speak to Bayern.
Clubs will naturally want to get Thiago’s price down, given he has less than a year left on his contract, in much the same way Bayern signed Leroy Sane from Manchester City.
Hoeneß also made some snipes over David Alaba, who is in the same contract situation and hasn’t yet renewed: “I had a coffee with him a few weeks ago. We all want David to stay with us. But he has a greedy piranha as an advisor. It’s really all about money. He’s already with the best club in the world. He’s 29 years old now and shouldn’t let himself be influenced from the outside.”
