Weston McKennie is making a habit of turning things around at Juventus after falling out with them, and he’s at again after turning down Aston Villa this summer.
That’s according to Calciomercato, who say a ‘twist of fate’ has ended up working in the American’s favour and putting him back in the picture at the Italian club.
They explain that Juventus had been keen to get rid of the midfielder this summer, proposing that he be a part of the deal with Aston Villa for Douglas Luiz.
McKennie turned that down, though, refusing to leave Juventus and forcing them to do a different deal to get things done with Villa.
That left the Italian side frustrated as they wanted McKennie out, a repeat of last summer when they also tried to push him away unsuccessfully.
Last year he turned things around and became a key player and that appears to be happening again under Thiago Motta.
CM explain that Motta made the surprise decision to go with McKennie instead of Luiz for the clash with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League and was rewarded for this with a superb performance from the midfielder.
He bagged the second goal of the game to make it 2-0 and put in a performance that will be remembered as a ‘night to engrave in McKennie’s album of memories’. In other words, he had an excellent game.
That goal and his performance have given him justification for his summer insistence that he wouldn’t be leaving to join Aston Villa.
The Premier League side had offered him €3m plus bonuses to make the move but he insisted he was staying and even renewed his deal with the Italians for less money.
That was a sign of his desire to remain with Juve and that ‘a new life in black and white’ is now opening up for him, something most would have thought impossible a couple of months ago.
