Over the weekend, Mundo Deportivo reported Barcelona have identified Marcos Alonso as a summer target and need to ‘find a formula to convince’ Chelsea to have any hope of signing the defender.
The La Liga side’s need to bring in a new left-back has increased as they are now close to agreeing a deal with Leeds United for Junior Firpo’s sale.
One of the players valued by the Catalan club for this position is the Blues fullback, having already looked at him in the winter market. That’s according to today’s Mundo Deportivo.
Thomas Tuchel hasn’t given regular starting opportunities to the Spaniard, but the coach values the 30-year-old a lot, mainly for his ability to play on the left side of defence or as a centre-back, especially in a three-man defence.
Therefore, the former PSG manager doesn’t want to part ways with Alonso and wants to retain him ‘at all costs’.
In addition to the Tuchel factor, Mundo also point out the former Sampdoria man is also happy with the ‘remuneration’ in his contract with the west London club, a deal that runs until 2023.
With several clubs working on lowering their salary budget, including Barcelona, it’s difficult for other clubs to match Alonso’s current wages at Chelsea. Therefore, it’s difficult for him to leave the Champions League winners.
