Ronald Koeman has long been reported as a possible successor for Luis Enrique, even before the Barcelona manager announced he’d be leaving the club. Koeman’s past with Barcelona, and his successful management stint in England, make him an obvious candidate for the role.
Whilst the Everton manager has never been one of the frontrunners, Koeman’s name has always been there or thereabouts.
Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo report on Monday that it’s pretty much certain Koeman will be staying at Everton and not moving to Barcelona. The reason for the confidence is Gerard Deulofeu.
Koeman and Deulofeu didn’t really hit it off at Everton, leading to the player’s AC Milan loan, so therefore Barcelona pairing them together would make little sense.
Mundo Deportivo explain that Robert Fernandez, Barcelona’s technical director, making it clear the €12m clause will likely be used, gives a clear hint the club’s next manager isn’t Koeman.
It’s also not likely to be Real Sociedad’s Eusebio, who fell out with Deulofeu at Barcelona B.
