Spanish newspaper AS are adamant Tottenham Hotspur are about to lose out on Pape Cheikh.
The midfielder is completing a move to Lyon after the French club agreed to pay €10m upfront and another €4m in bonuses. Frankly, that’s much more than Celta Vigo expected they’d get for the midfielder at the start of the summer, and a transfer much welcomed.
Pape Cheikh hasn’t been in the Celta team and the 20 year old, whilst being talented, hadn’t been banging the door down to the selection. Therefore, when Tottenham interest was first rumoured, it was grasped by the Spanish media and ran with.
Celta played a couple of preseason friendlies in England and a claim that Tottenham would scout Pape Cheikh quickly turned to a claim the club were on the verge of signing him for €10m. It all seemed a bit sudden, and over the top.
Sport Witness pointed out repeatedly that things seemed exaggerated but AS say there have been ‘incessant’ Tottenham efforts to sign the player during a relentless summer pursuit.
We’re not sure to buy it, but at least Celta have got their money, and it’s likely more thanks to the Tottenham links.
