In 1992, Leeds United contacted their fierce rivals Manchester United to ask about the possibility of buying Denis Irwin. Dismissing the approach out of hand, Manchester United’s Martin Edwards asked about the possibility of signing Eric Cantona.
The Frenchman was having a rough patch at Leeds United but was still a huge star of the team. It was a chance request, but Manchester United got their way and the rest is history.
If CalcioMercatoWeb are right, and to be honest it’s a big IF, then AS Roma have tried similar with Tottenham Hotspur. During talks about Tony Sanabria, a deal which several Italian media outlets say is close, Roma have apparently asked about signing Christian Eriksen.
It’s a long shot, but Roma want to replace Miralem Pjanic and Eriksen would be a very good replacement. CalcioMercatoWeb point out Eriksen’s contract runs until June 2018, so there may be a chance… but it’s got to be very unlikely.
The story does present another opportunity to ponder why Tottenham and Eriksen haven’t yet extended their relationship. Despite reports going back several months that a deal would be signed imminently, there’s been nothing confirmed yet and that’s a little cause for anxiety.
Not that we’re meaning to add to that anxiety, but Eriksen is a Roma fan. Back in 2012, whilst still at Ajax, the Danish international explained: “It is true I am a Roma fan. After each game with Ajax, the first thing I do is look at the result of Roma.”
“I do not know exactly when I became a fan of the red and yellow, but I remember when I was nine, playing FIFA Manager 2001, I always took Roma. I’d be thrilled to wear the jersey one day of Roma.”
