On Thursday, Voetbal International explained Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg prefers to continue his career in England, where Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are credited with an interest in the midfielder.
The Denmark international’s contract expires in 2021 and he’s already decided against signing an extension.
Multiple reports coming out of the British press on Thursday explained the Toffees have submitted a bid for the 24-year-old.
According to Ekstra Bladet, the Merseyside club’s opening proposal was in the range of £20-25m. The Saints have set an asking price of £35m and it’s not clear if Everton can convince them with their offer.
The former Bayern Munich man, however, reportedly prefers a move to Spurs.
The Danish newspaper also states Højbjerg has already been at Tottenham’s training facility and met José Mourinho.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy may not be in favour of investing heavily on a player who has a year left on his contract, and this is presented as what could kill the deal. Therefore, they are hoping that Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side would accept Kyle Walker-Peters as part payment.
Southampton have so far turned down a chance to sign Walker-Peters or any other Tottenham player that could be included in the exchange operation. The Saints are looking for a ‘large part of his valuation’, which is around £35m.
Højbjerg’s decision to not sign an extension made it clear he wants a summer move elsewhere, and it remains to be seen if he’ll join Everton, Tottenham or another club.
