Tottenham’s Vincent Janssen is the front page star of De Telegraaf’s Telesport section today. Monday saw the Netherlands squad arrive at the team hotel, and whereas sometimes the Dutch media get wrapped in what players are wearing, and what that means about their respect levels, the major question in Janssen.
Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t shown complete faith in the striker so far and Janssen hasn’t managed to give him enough reasons to change that. Whilst there can’t be doubt about the Dutchman’s effort, his goal return simply hasn’t been good enough.
Despite all of that, Netherlands manager Danny Blind continues to be keen on the player, and De Telegraaf say Janssen now needs to repay that trust. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite work that easily and pressure is building on the Tottenham player.
Janssen has confirmed that he spoke to Blind about his club future during the winter transfer window and revealed that his Tottenham stay was under question: “I have had a good telephone conversation with him in the winter. The content of the conversation I keep between us. And we should not make it bigger than it was, for it wasn’t so big.
“It was about how it then stood. I gathered advice from several people and it was evident very quickly that I was going to focus entirely on Tottenham.”
A good international break, with a goal or two, could be just what Janssen needs and positively impact on Tottenham too. But the opposite situation will see more pressure piled on Blind to assess his decisions and selection.
