When La Plata newspaper El Dia started reporting Tottenham’s pursuit of Juan Foyth, it really sounded like a done deal. But as days go by, and the situation gets more detailed, it’s starting to look like there are still some points to be agreed before that.

Yesterday, the newspaper had a story saying Estudiantes are in a hurry to sell the defender because they need the money. The club currently have a debt with the AFA, and the rules say there can’t be more than four signings unless these debts are settled.

It sounded pretty obvious that Estudiantes would sell Foyth to Tottenham, pay the AFA and then continue shopping in the transfer market. But that’s not what is happening, according to El Dia’s sources. The club actually has other plans for the money, including their new stadium.

Regarding Foyth, president Juan Sebastian Verón is in Europe to sarrange the sale. It’s claimed that no one joins or leaves Estudiantes until this deal is done, but Tottenham are no longer alone in the race. An Italian club, which they make it clear is not Roma, are now also interested.

Despite reporting Verón’s trip from Argentina to Frankfurt and from Germany to England yesterday, there are no updates on it today. It’s unknown if he has already met the Tottenham officials or not.

Estudiantes’ situation is expected to be sorted in five days, and that has a lot to do with Foyth’s sale. The deal still sounds likely, but not as simple as when first reported.
