Tottenham Hotspur’s Steven Bergwijn and Aston Villa’s Anwar El Ghazi will be dropped from the Netherlands squad for the summer’s European championship.
Earlier this month, Oranje manager Frank de Boer announced his provisional squad that had the names of 34 players.
The Spurs forward and the Aston Villa winger made it to that list, but they will miss out on the final squad, as per various reports in the Dutch media.
According to NOS, Bergwijn is one of the eight players to drop out from the pre-selection list. This has been confirmed by the Tottenham player’s agent to NOS.
De Boer will name his 26-man squad for Euro 2020 at 2pm Dutch time and will then hold a press conference two hours later.
These claims are also reported by De Telegraaf, and they add the former Crystal Palace manager has already informed his decision to Bergwijn ‘by telephone’.
He struggled for regular playing time at Tottenham in 2021 and that’s partly why he has not made it to the final list.
Another report from De Telegraaf states De Boer has decided not to take El Ghazi to Euros, after including the Aston Villa player out of nowhere in his provisional squad.
