Steven Bergwijn going to Ajax from Tottenham this summer would be ‘taking a step back’ for the player.
That’s according to analyst Wim Kieft, who believes the player has been found out during his time with Spurs.
Bergwijn joined Tottenham in a €30m deal from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 when Jose Mourinho looked to strengthen his forward options in the winter window.
He made an immediate impact at the club but was unable to build on that, instead finding himself on the periphery behind the likes of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.
That’s not changed despite a change of manager at the club, with the Dutchman also struggling to force his way into Antonio Conte’s plans.
A record of eight goals and ten assists in 83 games is not a record to shout about, and several reports have made it clear Tottenham are keen to cut their losses this summer.
Indeed, the player has made it clear he will be leaving, and Ajax appear to be at the front of the queue for his signature as they plan for the likely departure of several first-team stars. Kieft, though, isn’t convinced Bergwijn should be returning to the Netherlands.
“Going to Ajax is also taking a step back, right?” he told Vandaag Inside.
“After he played at PSV and went to Tottenham Hotspur. You just want to play football; Tottenham is just too high for him.”
