Barcelona view centre forward as a strategic position and have been trying to bring in a new No.9 for over a year.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the La Liga winners had turned their attention towards Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.
The Catalan club currently mostly rely on Luis Suárez, who has been their main striker since he arrived at Camp Nou from Liverpool in 2014.
Suárez, 33, has struggled with injuries and has been operated on twice over the last year. Given the situation with the Uruguay international, Barca wanted to make a ‘big signing’ of a striker.
It’s claimed the England international was the ‘most desired’ by Barcelona’s technical leaders because of his ‘finishing ability, physique, effectiveness’ and most importantly, his goalscoring record for club and country.
Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu contacted Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy last year to understand his position with regards to the 26-year-old’s transfer.
Mundo states the north London chief was clear and gave a negative response. It’s stated ‘Levy was clear’ slapped an ‘off the market price’ on the frontman.
