At one point, actually at several points, most of the points during qualifying to be more precise, it looked like Denmark were going to miss out on World Cup qualification.
A terrible start to their group was a huge disappointment and made even a play-off place look a tall order. Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen always kept belief, and even when qualification looked impossible, it was the Spurs man saying Denmark would simply have to win all of their games, there was no other way for it.
That may not have been quite achieved, but Denmark can now look toward a play-off. Ekstra Bladet say a lot of that is down to Eriksen. Whilst they point out Nicklas Bendtner has had a good return to the national team as part of his career revival, it’s stated there’s only one King… Christian.
Denmark will probably be unseeded in the draw, but Eriksen is confident that shouldn’t dent their hopes too much, especially given the country’s recent run of form: “I think that, as it is currently going, we can play against anyone – even the big teams. But there are no teams that are easy in international football.”
Eriksen will likely be returning to Tottenham with a smile on his face, which can’t be bad news for Mauricio Pochettino.
