As October closed, and Manchester United’s victory over Tottenham gave Jose Mourinho a reason to be less miserable, Anthony Martial to Spurs was touched on again in France.
L’Equipe said Mauricio Pochettino could have really done with the forward on his side, to stand up in place of Harry Kane, instead of him being important for the opposition.
That had been Pochettino’s plan, the French newspaper pointed out, with another attempt to sign the player during the summer transfer window. Tottenham had wanted Martial before he went to Manchester United, and had returned, hoping to capitalise on the player’s difficult first season under Mourinho.
Sure, it’s not throwing a bone for Tottenham, but the club’s interest in Martial now seems a part of the skeleton of articles on his season.
Martial has the potential to be an absolute world star, and it’s easy to forget he’s still only 21 years of age. If Mourinho sticks around at Old Trafford, and gets that Ivan Perisic type left winger he keeps hinting about, then Martial’s chances will be more restricted, especially with the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
There’s no harm in Tottenham keeping that flame burning.
