Back in August, news emerged in France that Tottenham were interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain’s young forward Jean-Kévin Augustin.
According to L’Equipe, Mauricio Pochettino’s side had allegedly made an approach, with a view to buy him, but the Ligue 1 champions weren’t particularly interested in seeing yet another talented youth product leave the club.
Augustin was then used by Unai Emery as a backup for Edinson Cavani, making appearances here and there towards the end of games, even starting the odd one.
Fast forward to December, and the same newspaper claimed Tottenham had actually made an offer in the summer, and a possible January move was being touted, with PSG preferring a loan over a sale.
Now in February, there has been very little sign of the youngster on the French club’s bench, and that’s because he’s now been relegated to the reserves.
Refusing to go out on loan in January, the 19-year-old also refused a two-year contract extension that would have seen him remain at the club until 2020.
With his current deal expiring next summer, the next transfer window appears to be the best time for a transfer to materialise, and if Tottenham are still interested, that’s when they are most likely to pounce.
However, they won’t be alone and would need act quick, as Borussia Dortmund are already said to have agreed personal terms with the player, and would be willing to offer around €8m for him.
It would then be all down to Paris Saint-Germain to decide on the player’s future: let him leave on a free in 2018 as a matter of principle or cash in while they still can?
