Tottenham could make a new attempt to sign Lautaro Martinez this summer, having failed to get him in the past.
That’s according to Tuttosport, who back up reports elsewhere that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici could target the Argentine to play alongside Harry Kane.
Earlier today, we covered comments from Italian journalists Enzo Buchioni and Gianluca di Marzio stating that Tottenham were very much in the picture for Martinez because the director of football loves him.
It was even stated that Spurs would be a ‘perfect destination’ for the striker, with the belief Conte could get the best of him like he did at Inter.
Tuttosport back that up somewhat, stating that after an ‘unsuccessful attempt’ last summer, Tottenham could ‘come back’ for Martinez.
They explain that after Romelu Lukaku was sold to Chelsea last summer, Paratici made a move to take advantage of Inter’s financial situation and get Martinez.
He made a bid of €70m, but Inter said no, having already sold the Belgian and Achraf Hakimi that summer.
Their interest has not gone away, and while Conte would prefer to sign Lukaku, it seems Chelsea, beyond their current difficulties, would not sell him to one of their main rivals.
Thus, Tottenham will have to find an alternative as they seek a player to sit alongside Harry Kane in a 3-5-2 and Martinez would fit.
Like last summer, they could take advantage of the financial situation at Inter, which will likely see another fire-sale this summer, so they can make their own transfer moves.
Martinez is the player who would have the biggest market and receive the ‘richest offer’, and if Spurs were to offer €70m again, then those in charge at Inter ‘would think about it’.
They’re aiming to cash in for a bigger sum, around €80m, but €70m would be the ‘minimum threshold’ for them to say yes.
The Italian champions are open to a sale as it would release immediate funds but also free up space for them to sign Paulo Dybala when he leaves Juventus on a free transfer.
Atlético Madrid might also be keen on Martinez, but a possible call from Conte, who he managed 40 goals and 19 assists in 97 games for at Inter, could represent an ‘important magnet’ to pull him to London.
