James Rodriguez continues to be strongly linked with an exit from Real Madrid. Unhappy with his lack of game time, the Colombian star reportedly believes he could have his next destination sorted within two weeks, even though it’s been hard to find a club who will pay his price.
Spanish outlet El Confidencial explains the player’s situation, saying that even Manchester United and Inter Milan, who were the strongest sides in the race, won’t get near the €75m demanded by Real Madrid.
A club less likely than both of those to pay the money is Tottenham Hotspur.
Yet, El Confidencial link Spurs with interest in the player. Of all the Premier League’s top clubs, Tottenham would seem the unlikeliest to spend a huge amount on a footballer who is potentially overvalued, and who will turn 26 years of age next month.
Tottenham are said to be keen on the player but will go ‘nowhere near’ the €75m price tag.
Assuming there’s anything in Tottenham interest, it could be an idea from the club to recruit a player deemed to be near the top of the transfer market. That could give Spurs a commercial boost. But any transfer would surely have to be at a hugely reduced price, similar to Rafael van der Vaart’s move to White Hart Lane from Real Madrid.
But how low would be low enough for Tottenham, and how interested would James even be? It would have to be a Daniel Levy special, one of which is overdue.
