Earlier on Saturday we covered a report from A Bola which stated Tottenham Hotspur and Bayer Leverkusen are interested in João Filipe.
A 19 year old forward, who can play anywhere across the front line, João Filipe is better known as Jota, and has represented Portugal extensively at all youth levels.
The Portuguese newspaper said Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen were both considering paying the player’s €30m release clause, before Benfica give him a new deal and raise the buyout to €100m.
It’s become clear that someone is pushing this story. That could be Benfica trying to hype the player, or people close to Jota hyping interest in order to pressure the Lisbon club into offering a big new contract on better terms than they otherwise would have.
Alternatively, the interest may be spot on.
Both Record and O Jogo report that Tottenham are keen on the youngster, but they both say the German competition is Bayern Munich.
So that’s Portugal’s three sport newspapers all reporting Spurs interest on the same day.
It’s claimed Real Madrid offered €18m for the player last year, but this was knocked back.
