‘Lamela, the surprise’ say Argentine newspaper Ole in a small snippet for their Thursday edition.
With excitement building in Argentina ahead of this summer’s World Cup, there’s still the possibility of players fighting their way into Jorge Sampaoli’s thinking.
The manager is said to be a fan of the Tottenham player, but what goes against Lamela is the long time he’s been out injured, only returning at the end of last year.
Despite that, Ole believe Lamela could be set for a ‘surprise’ call-up, even if it’s only to the initial list of 35 players. Sampaoli would then have to whittle that number down before choosing his final Argentina squad for the World Cup, but Ole believe the Tottenham player is ‘in the orbit’ of the national manager.
To have a good chance, Lamela needs to be impressing for Tottenham Hotspur, and likely starting games rather than coming off the bench.
On the bench for the match against Swansea City last weekend, after some starts, Lamela will hope Mauricio Pochettino sees him as a key player between now and the end of the season.
That way, the dream would be alive.
