As things stand, Serge Aurier is the only recognised right-back at Tottenham Hotspur, as Kyle Walker-Peters is currently on loan at Southampton, while Japhet Tanganga can also play in the position if needed.
That means Spurs will likely look to strengthen their defence in the next window and signing a new right-back will probably be a priority.
Over the last few days, reports coming out of the Catalan media talked about the north London club chasing Emerson, who is on loan at Real Betis from Barcelona until 2021.
Sport now claims José Mourinho’s side have ‘asked about’ the 21-year-old.
After originally investing €6m, the Catalan club need to pay €6m to Betis in order to cut short the Brazilian’s loan spell (it’s a bit of a weird situation).
To take this step, the La Liga winners will need an offer in excess of €20m. However, they have not received any official proposal for the fullback.
Barca believe it’s a good year to sell Emerson because he has made his debut with the Brazilian national team back in November, and, in addition to this, it is difficult for him to be part of their squad because he’s a non-EU player.
Therefore, the La Liga champions have decided to make him available in the market this summer and Emerson will be sold if there is a ‘definitive offer’.
However, it’s also worth pointing out Sport’s report provides no indication to suggest that Tottenham will submit a proposal for the South American now or in the near future.
All they’ve done is ask about him, which is a first step, but we’ll have to wait and see if they go any further for now.
