Last summer Andre Gomes was hyped up beyond all reason. The then Valencia footballer was repeatedly linked with Manchester United and Juventus, and with the former there didn’t seem to be a great deal in it, but the media were insistent.
Then Real Madrid swooped in and got a deal all ready to sign Gomes, and just at the last minute Barcelona pushed past their rivals and got a deal done in what seemed like less than a day.
Unsurprisingly the 23 year old midfielder hasn’t quite been the new Iniesta he was packaged as, and whilst clearly a classy and technically gifted footballer, he’s had a questionable first year at Barcelona.
So where do Tottenham and Arsenal come into this? Well, the Catalan media report Barcelona have received three ‘interesting’ offers for Gomes, with the €35m figure being passed around.
Mundo Deportivo report the main two suspects are Juventus and Manchester United again, but they then add: ‘The other could be Arsenal or Tottenham.’
There’s zero explanation for mentioning Tottenham and Arsenal, although it is stated the third club is expected to be from the Premier League. As easily as plucking out Tottenham and Arsenal, one could choose Liverpool and Everton, West Ham and Crystal Palace… it’s quite odd.
Mundo Deportivo don’t suggest this is wink-wink-nudge-nudge, that they actually know the third offer is from North London, just not if it’s Tottenham or Arsenal flavoured.
It’s a mystery, but perhaps they’re trying to build a case for someone to pay big bucks for Andre Gomes.
As for whether Mauricio Pochettino and Arsene Wenger would be interested… they’d surely have concerns about the player’s first season with Barcelona, and whether he’d cope any better in the more boisterous Premier League.
