On Sunday evening, we covered a few articles from the Netherlands which made it clear just how furious PSV are with Steven Bergwijn and those who represent him.
According to what the Dutch club have been telling their local media, the attacker pretty much refused to play on Sunday against FC Twente. There were even rumours he’d travelled to London ahead of a potential Tottenham medical, with PSV making it clear there was no permission to do so and that they were considering calling off talks with Spurs.
On Monday morning, Eindhoven Dagblad report the situation at PSV is ‘totally out of control’, and that Sunday was like a ‘scene from the Wild West’ after Bergwijn’s refusal, the subsequent reports, and then a disappointing 1-1 draw.
Tottenham have offered around €30m, which isn’t considered good enough but doesn’t feel like it’s very far far away.
PSV are especially annoyed because last summer Bergwijn promised to stay with the Eredivisie club for another year. He then received a ‘substantial fee’ and a ‘large amount of signing money’, ED say the club could ask for this back.
Bergwijn took to Instagram on Sunday evening, blamed the media and said he didn’t refuse to play, with the manager giving him permission to miss the match.
The response to that is it being made clear the 22 year old telephoned his manager and indicated he wouldn’t play, and Ernest Faber then informed him he wouldn’t be selected.
Monday’s edition of De Telegraaf also goes with the €30m Tottenham offer and reports the fee isn’t the biggest problem, it’s how it will be paid. Negotiations were in ‘full swing’ last night, with ‘payment terms and other details’ needing to be agreed.
The Dutch newspaper reports ‘the chaos in Eindhoven is now huge’, given the Bergwijn situation and poor results recently.
Tottenham would be a ‘dream transfer’ for the youngster, and it seems like a real effort in talks today could get this over the line.
But Spurs and the player need to be careful not to try and push PSV too far.
