Luis Suarez recently told the media that, when at Barcelona, he’d told the club to consider signing Darwin Nunez, but nothing was done about it.

These claims are said to caused ‘surprise’ at the Camp Nou, according to Mundo Deportivo. They say, in a ‘Top Secret’ report, that sources, from both Almeria and Barcelona have told them an attempt was made when Nunez was still playing in Spain.

The plan was to buy a percentage of Nunez’s rights and then leave him at Almeria to develop for a further season, when he could then have moved to the Camp Nou more prepared for the higher level.

Mundo say Joao Gonçalves, who was then technical director at Almeria, has confirmed this to them. Barcelona then struggled to get the deal agreed, owing at least partly to their ongoing problems with finances.

Benfica swooped in, and now Nunez is being watched by multiple clubs around Europe, including the Blaugrana. The player is in the ‘spotlight’ at Ronald Koeman’s club, but again finances could stop a move.

Nunez will now be far more expensive, and that could take him out of Barcelona’s reach.
