The Dutch media are very keen to see Vincent Janssen do well at Tottenham Hotspur, for several reasons.
They like him. Compared to some flash Dutch youngsters in recent years, Janssen is seen as a young footballer who has fought back from rejection and still has his feet on the ground.
There’s a matter of pride. Janssen was top scorer in the Eredivisie last season, and they don’t want to see another big Dutch import to the Premier League fail. Memphis Depay is a notable recent example, although the Manchester United player has time to turn that around.
Selfish reasons are important too. The Netherlands could really do with a Vincent Janssen who is firing on all cylinders, rather than one who is stuck on the Tottenham bench, getting a few minutes here and there.
Given all of that, the looming return of Harry Kane is worrisome, especially given that Janssen hasn’t exactly been on fire during the Englishman’s absence.
Voetbal Primeur say ‘time is running out’ for Janssen, discouraged by Mauricio Pochettino’s comments in his press conference on Thursday. With Pochettino saying Kane is expected back training for Spurs soon, and with Janssen not even starting in his absence, and still not breaking his PL duck, there’s some anxiety.
A goal, or maybe two, against West Brom at the weekend and the worries will be eased, but he’s got to get on the pitch first.
