Matz Sels was called up to the most recent Belgium squad, but far from him being in a highlight period of his career, the Newcastle United goalkeeper could be on the verge of disaster.

That’s according to Belgium’s Voetbal24, who are concerned about the goalkeeper’s future. Sels arrived at Newcastle United from Gent in June, and in Belgium there will have been an expectation he’d be number one.

After failing to impress either manager Rafa Benitez or Newcastle United’s supporters, Sels was dropped from the club’s starting line-up in favour of Karl Darlow. However, Voetbal24 believe that Darlow hasn’t impressed either, leaving Newcastle United supporters looking towards the return of Rob Elliot.

Elliot is now back in training, and it’s reported in Belgium that it would be a ‘disaster’ for Sels if he finds himself as third choice goalkeeper. Not only would he have been relegated from first choice, but have gone through that at a Championship club.

That would surely means Sels couldn’t continue in the Belgian squad, with Roberto Martinez likely to look at other options for his own third choice. It all depends on the choices of Rafa Benitez, but if he does drop down, then Sels may be looking for a quick exit next summer, especially with Tim Krul possibly returning as first choice.
