FIFA this week named their The Best team, voted for by footballers around the world.
These things are always the cause of much disagreement, with many, even in Spain, wondering how Real Madrid’s Marcelo got in ahead of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.
No Manchester United players were included, which was never going to be a surprise given there were no standout seasons from any of the squad. The man who came closest was David De Gea, who ended up third in the goalkeeper votes, behind Alisson and Ter Stegen, yet ahead of Ederson and Jan Oblak.
Paul Pogba came seventh in the midfielder rating.
Around 150,000 votes were made in each category, and this time there is a Manchester United presence.
Phil Jones, Fred, and Alexis Sanchez have all made their way into the selection. The Chilean is now on loan at Inter Milan, yet it’s it’s his performances, or lack of them, for United which have won him the honour.
Jones was voted the worst defender overall, with 47% of the vote, whereas Fred came third behind Philippe Coutinho and Renato Sanches.
Sanchez ran away with the attacker votes, picking up 75%.
