Liverpool face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, and the match is obviously receiving plenty of coverage in the Spanish media.
It’s an important tie for both clubs, and as such, anyone who happens to have a connection to Atletico and Liverpool is being asked for their view on both sides and the match ahead.
Therefore, Emiliano Insua has been contacted by Mundo Deportivo, with the Argentine asked to give his take. When it came to who he wants to win the match, Insua sat on the fence, insisting he has good memories from his spells with both the Reds and the Rojiblancos.
Insua signed for Liverpool in 2007 from Boca Juniors, a huge step for a young footballer.
Mundo asked him what the experience was like for an 18-year-old, and he replied: “At that moment you do not realise what you are experiencing. You thought that what happened was something normal, that it happened to everyone, but over the years you realise that it is not, and that is when you begin to appreciate how important it was, the experience that I had to live. Those were three and a half beautiful years, I really enjoyed them. There a beautiful career began to take shape.”
Insua gives a lot of credit to his Liverpool experience for helping him grow as a person and a footballer. Mundo also asked about his time as a teammate of Fernando Torres at Anfield, and Insua only had good things to say about him and another former Liverpool star: “We were together for three years. Seeing him and enjoying him on the pitch was beautiful. I agree with you, I think they were the best years of him as a footballer. He reached a very high level and Rafa Benitez made him explode.
“Then the English league strengthened him and gave him the best qualities, strength, speed, power. He adapted very quickly, it was a pleasure to play with him, he gave you all the solutions, he scored goals, held the ball, drew fouls. Both he and Gerrard were awesome.”
Insua is now 32-years-of-age, and plays for Club Atlético Aldosivi in Argentina.
