Mateo Mejia left Manchester United in January 2023, having been at the club since 2019 but having never played for the first-team.
The striker joined Sevilla on a free transfer, having been released by Manchester United so he could do so, and has been a part of their reserve side since then.
He’s clearly been making progress because he made his first-team debut this weekend, as the 21-year-old came on against Athletic Club Bilbao in Sevilla’s 1-1 draw.
Diario de Sevilla have looked at the forward’s situation, stating that Mejia burst onto the scene rather ‘decisively’ against Athletic.
He wrote about his debut on social media saying: “I assure you that this is just the beginning and I will continue to give everything for this badge and these colours.”
The newspaper went on to praise how Mejia played a role in Sevilla’s late goal and how his teammates were impacted positively by his arrival on the pitch.
The 21-year-old, the outlet state, made more of an impact than summer signing Kelechi Iheanacho and they argue that Mejia could well be above the ex-Manchester City man in the club’s pecking order for attackers.
While the youngster didn’t quite make a mark at Manchester United, his rise at Sevilla should be another good sign for the Red Devils’ academy.
