Georginio Wijnaldum has hinted that problems behind the scenes were the cause of his decision to leave Liverpool this summer.
The Dutch international will officially leave Liverpool on a free transfer at the beginning of July, having allowed his contract to run down at the club.
He had been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona for the last year, but in a surprise, twist appears to be on his way to Paris Saint Germain.
His departure comes as a blow for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has turned Wijnaldum into a key player during his time in charge.
The Dutchman was waved away from Anfield amid raucous applause at the end of the season, with players, staff and fans all lauding his contribution to their recent success.
Most have been surprised by his departure given the close relationships he clearly has at Liverpool, but he has now hinted there were problems behind the scenes.
“I am still emotional because at that moment you realise: It was my last game for Liverpool,” he told Voetbal International.
“Also, the fact that before me, many players left who didn’t get something like that makes it special for me.
“There are many supporters who ask me why I didn’t just accept the offer from Liverpool to extend my contract.
“But of course, it’s not just that. It’s about much more than that. There are things happening behind the scenes that you cannot influence as a player.
“I will explain that after the tournament, because now only Orange counts.
“What I do want to say is that the people at the training complex, the staff of the club and my fellow players would have liked to keep me.
“I did tell them a bit more. After that, they understood my decision completely. That is important to me.”
