Following the attempts made by Newcastle United to sign Diego Carlos from Sevilla this month, the Spanish side never tried to hide that they were stopping the defender from leaving.
Club director Monchi confirmed that the Magpies’ offer for the 28-year-old was not good enough for a deal, and now their president spoke about the decision to hold onto the player as well.
Speaking to Onda Cero, Pepe Castro talked about the ‘effort’ made by the Spanish side to turn down the offers they had for Diego Carlos, as they hope they can keep the same level for the rest of the season.
“The economic effort has not only been in the two reinforcements but also in keeping Diego Carlos, for whom they’ve made a dizzying offer,” said Pepe Castro (via Estadio Deportivo).
“But Diego Carlos is an extraordinary professional, he’s the one who has played the most minutes and has not stopped playing with offers. Our defence is the best in La Liga, spoiling that would have been risky and there has been an economic effort.”
Reports from Spain this month have been claiming that Newcastle put on the table around €45m for Diego Carlos, and even though more recent claims said the Magpies could raise their bid in €5m or €10m, it seems their improved attempt was never really made, and was perhaps left for the next window.
