Everton and Paulo Fonseca links haven’t been rare in recent months and it’s excited fans of the club, but also the Portuguese media.
Portuguese newspapers love their compatriots doing well in English football, and would like Fonseca to make the move to Goodison Park.
At the end of March the links to Everton were once again covered and presented as what will be the likely outcome, but that may have been at least partly through hope rather than genuine information.
In Ukraine the idea of Fonseca leaving Shakhtar Donetsk has also been covered, but so has the idea of the manager sticking around.
Talking several times recently about a possible contract extension, Fonseca has done so again. Speaking to the club’s official website (which obviously means he’s not going to talk up an exit), the manager was asked if he’s now more inclined to prolong his contract: “I don’t know, at the moment there’s different possibilities. The club made me an offer for an extension, we conduct a dialogue and study certain things. Soon we will make a decision and declare it to you.”
Fonseca was then asked if he’d like to stay: “I really like Shakhtar. And at the same time, there are different aspects of the contract, where we have to come to an agreement. I think it’s completely obvious that I’m glad to be in this club in Ukraine. People respect me, and I’m happy here.”
It’s going to have to be a good offer to get Fonseca away, and with Sam Allardyce declaring he’s staying, Everton would need to deal with that too… and would need to have the desire to do so.
