Rasmus Hojlund impressed in spells during his first season at Manchester United.
The Danish striker scored a total of 16 goals in all competitions last season, finding the back of the net ten times in the Premier League.
He’s been unavailable so far this season for Manchester United but having resumed training, he could return soon.
Fellow Dane Peter Schmeichel has now spoken out in support of Hojlund in an interview with TipsBladet, hailing his potential and also suggesting the system under Erik ten Hag doesn’t favour the striker.
“He is a fantastic talent. The possibilities that lie within him are at the highest level.
“Now Ruud van Nistelrooy came in and I spoke to him briefly. He says there is so much potential in this. If he can help him…”
Schmeichel further mentioned that some things in the Manchester United set-up need to be changed.
“It’s not just Rasmus! The team is not playing him right, so there are some things that need to be corrected.”
The ex-Red Devils’ goalkeeper had more praise for Hojlund, suggesting that the striker is mature beyond his age and will score a lot of goals in his career.
“He is a very impressive young person. He is far older than the 21 years he is. He has a great perspective. He is very sensible and cheeky – all the things you want in a young striker.
“He has shown that if he is being pressured, he can do it himself. If he can get the team to back him up, I can’t see that he won’t just score a lot of goals.”
The addition of Joshua Zirkzee has added more competition to Hojlund in attacking positions this season and there is now pressure on to perform.
While his ability can’t be questioned considering his raw abilities and his goalscoring form last season, injuries have been an issue and that needs to be put in the past.
